Fitzpatrick Casts Votes Benefiting Veterans

May 21, 2013 Issues: Veterans

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congressman Mike Fitzpatrick (PA-8) voted Tuesday on a series of bills affecting veterans in a variety of ways.

“As an advocate for the brave servicemen and women both in my district and around the nation, today’s votes help to ensure we do right by them," said Fitzpatrick.

The legislation passed includes:

  •  Improving Job Opportunities for Veterans Act [HR 1412]: Among other items, this bill would establish agreements with Federal departments and agencies to establish 'on-the-job' training programs for veterans.
  • American Heroes COLA Act [HR570]: Provides for an automatic increase in disability compensation, and dependence and indemnity compensation for veterans indexed to Social Security cost of living increases.
  • Helping Heroes Fly Act [HR 1344]: Directs the Transportation Safety Administration to provide expedited passenger screening for severely injured or disabled veterans and members of the Armed Forces and their families.
  • HR 324: Granting the Congressional Gold Medal to the First Special Force, in recognition of its superior service during World War II. Congressman Fitzpatrick is a co-sponsor of this legislation.

Fitzpatrick has championed legislation that would assist veterans, and, as a member of the Veterans Jobs Caucus, has focused on making sure veterans highly-marketable skills are transitioned into our economy.  He has worked with local trade and technical schools, including Middle Bucks Institute of Technology, to open up career training options to veterans by allowing them to use their GI Bill benefits outside of a traditional university setting and training them for highly sought after manufacturing and trades skill positions.

“We owe a debt of gratitude to our veterans and I will continue to work for them however I can,” added Fitzpatrick.

“Any veterans, old or young, are encouraged to contact my office and our Veterans Affairs department for information on anything from education to their VA benefits.”

Military and Veteran’s Affairs caseworks are available at Fitzpatrick’s Langhorne District office at 1717 Langhorne-Newtown Rd., Suite 400, Langhorne or by phone at 215-579-8102.
