Fitzpatrick, House Help Disabled Veterans with Bipartisan Bill

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congressman Mike Fitzpatrick (PA-8) voted Tuesday in support of the bipartisan Veterans' Compensation Cost-of-Living Adjustment Act of 2013 [S. 893] which passed the House by a voice vote.

“Each Veterans Day we recognize the service and sacrifice of our nation’s military veterans. For many veterans and their families that sacrifice did not end on the battlefield,” said Fitzpatrick. “That’s why last night I joined the House in passing vital legislation that helps take some financial burdens off of our disabled veterans, their families, and surviving spouses.”

The Veterans' Compensation Cost-of-Living Adjustment Act provides a cost-of-living increase in disability compensation, compensation for dependents, dependency and indemnity compensation for surviving spouses and children.

“In passing this bipartisan bill, both the House and Senate have acknowledged that injured veterans returning from war deserve compensation that reflects the economy of today,” continued Fitzpatrick. “Furthermore, this bill standardizes cost-of-living increases to disability compensation, giving veterans a better footing when it comes to financial planning.”

“Today’s veterans have kept faith with all our previous generations of America’s military.  Like our first vets, we stepped up and won wars in spite of unpreparedness, multiple deployments and family hardship.  This legislation keeps the faith between America and its disabled veterans,” said Col. Larry Rubini (Ret.), a member of Fitzpatrick’s Veterans’ Advisory Board.  “In this time of scarce resources, it guarantees a level field with other deserving Americans who have earned a retirement benefit.  I applaud the bipartisan support given this legislation and Congressman Fitzpatrick’s efforts to achieve fairness to America’s military families. “

“I will continue to champion legislation that gets our nation’s fighting men and women back to work, as well as policies that ensure we as a nation serve them in their time of need – be it with medical care or financial assistance,” added Fitzpatrick.

Fitzpatrick is a member of the Congressional Veterans Jobs Caucus and has been active in supporting pro-veteran and military legislation during the 113th Congress.
