Fitzpatrick: We Deserve to Know All the Facts About Benghazi

WASHINGTON, DC –Congressman Mike Fitzpatrick (PA-8) released the following statement Wednesday on the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee’s hearing on the September 11, 2012 attacks on the U.S. Embassy in Benghazi, Libya:

“After nearly nine months I was intrigued to listen to firsthand accounts of the terror attacks in Benghazi, and quickly noted the differences between what was being said by the three whistleblowers and the story espoused by the administration.

What we know is that four Americans, including a U.S. ambassador, were killed in a coordinated terror attack. Unfortunately, that is where the certainty ends.

Following the hearing there are more questions than answers - while the picture of the event itself became clearer thanks to the testimony of these three brave, high-ranking State Department officials, we are still left wondering how this could have happened and why more wasn’t done in reaction. We have a duty to protect the lives of American citizens serving around the world. Unfortunately, it seems far too many are willing to push the accounts of those with firsthand information in order to protect a political narrative or score political points.

Today’s testimony casts doubt on the administration’s carefully scripted storyline, including reports that military personnel were told to stand down when reacting to the attack, and that government officials restricted the ability of the whistleblowers to be a part of the investigation into the attack.

These new claims, on top of the already debunked theory that the attack was a spontaneous demonstration in reaction to an online video, call for further investigation and hearings by Congress. I remain a strong supporter of H. Res. 36 with over 130 of my colleagues to demand that a 19-member select committee be created to investigate this matter further. The American people deserve to know all of the facts.

I look forward - with colleagues from both sides of the aisle and millions of Americans - to finding out the truth about what took place, and what can be done to prevent similar events in the future.”

Congressman Mike Fitzpatrick is serving his third term in the U.S. House of Representatives. He represents Pennsylvania’s 8th district which includes all of Bucks County as well as a portion of Montgomery County. He serves as the Vice Chairman of the House Financial Services Subcommittee on Oversight and Investigations.
