Fitzpatrick to Travelers: Avoid the Surge, Renew Passports Early

Apr 19, 2017
Press Release
Unprecedented Numbers of U.S. Passports Set to Expire; Early Renewal Could Save Headaches

LANGHORNE, PA – Congressman Brian Fitzpatrick (PA-08) is urging constituents to plan ahead and renew passports early to avoid the upcoming “Passport Surge” which could delay applications and renewals. According to the State Dept., approximately 48 million passports are set to expire between now and 2019. The Philadelphia Passport Agency alone anticipates at least 21.1 million passport applications this year and 20.6 million in next year.

“As a result of the upcoming ‘Passport Surge,’ the Philadelphia Passport Agency is encouraging travelers whose passports expire this year to renew now,” said Fitzpatrick. “Passport processing times are expected to go up for routine processing this year. By renewing early, travelers can avoid logistical difficulties since many foreign countries require passports to have at least six months of validity.”

In 2007, the Department of State experienced an unprecedented surge in new passport applications, issuing over 18 million passports, because of the Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative. Now, ten years later, those passports are set to expire.

The Philadelphia Passport Agency usually processes routine application in 6-8 weeks and expedited applications (additional $60 charge) in 2-3 weeks. For more information, visit www.travel.state.gov. Constituents with additional questions are encouraged to contact Fitzpatrick’s district office at (215) 579-8102.
