WASHINGTON, D.C. – Last week, U.S. Representatives Brian Fitzpatrick (R-PA-01), Kat Cammack (R-FL-03), and Eddie Bernice Johnson (D-TX-30) introduced the Taiwan Preclearance Act. The bill expresses the importance of the United States' relationship with Taiwan and Taiwan's importance in the Indo-Pacific region. The bill also requires a report on establishing a Customs and Border Protection (CBP) preclearance facility at the Taipei Taoyuan International Airport (TPE).

The Taipei Taoyuan International Airport offers dozens of flights a week to and from the United States, with connections throughout Asia. The establishment of a preclearance facility will create a seamless experience for U.S.-bound passengers and further encourage growth in travel between Taiwan and the U.S.

"The United States and Taiwan share a commitment to democratic values and sound economic principles," said Rep. Fitzpatrick. "Given our economic ties and security priorities, establishing a CBP preclearance facility in Taiwan is a logical way to increase collaboration with our strategic partner. Our bipartisan Taiwan Preclearance Act will also benefit American travelers by ensuring safe and efficient travel throughout the Indo-Pacific region."

"I am excited to introduce this important measure in the House to ensure the United States' support of an airport preclearance facility at the Taipei International Airport in Taiwan," said Rep. Cammack. "Taiwan is one of our most important allies and an essential economic partner with shared values and security priorities. This new facility will ensure easier, safer travel—something that is long overdue. I'm grateful to Rep. Johnson for her partnership in this effort."

"Throughout my career, I have been a strong supporter of the Taiwanese people and the right to travel freely and safely between the United States and Taiwan," added Rep. Johnson. "At a time when our two countries are more connected than ever before, it is critical that we signal Taiwan’s importance as a geostrategic security partner. That is why I am proud to work with Rep. Cammack to increase security and convenience in the travel process through the establishment of a preclearance facility in Taoyuan International Airport (TPE)."

"Taiwan is a longstanding ally and trusted Indo-Pacific partner," said Rep. Balderson. "This first step in establishing a preclearance facility at the Taipei Taoyuan International Airport further strengthens the enduring relationship between our two countries in the face of Chinese Community Party aggression and opens the door for increased commercial and tourism opportunities in the region."

"Strengthening our economic and security partnership with Taiwan should continue to be of the utmost importance," said Rep. Pappas. "This bipartisan legislation to study the establishment of a customs preclearance location in Taiwan is a commonsense step in our diplomatic partnership, and I will continue to advocate for policies that will strengthen our relationship."

Senator Josh Hawley (R-MO) introduced the Senate companion last week.

Bill cosponsors at the time of introduction include Reps. Kat Cammack, Eddie Bernice Johnson, Troy Balderson, Michael Burgess, Rodney Davis, Scott DesJarlais, Mario Diaz-Balart, Scott Franklin, Carlos Gimenez, Bill Johnson, Frank Lucas, Nancy Mace, Tracey Mann, Mariannette Miller-Meeks, Chris Pappas, Donald Payne, Jr., and Kurt Schrader.
