WASHINGTON D.C. – U.S. Representative Brian Fitzpatrick (R-PA) released the below statement following the House vote on H.R.8873:
“I proudly support the hard work of Senator Collins (R-ME), Senator Manchin (D-WV), and their Senate colleagues and their pursuit of sincere, independent improvements to the Electoral Count Act. And I look forward to voting for their genuinely bipartisan bill on the House floor after Senate passage.
“For years, our nation has been demanding that Congress unite to restore, not further erode, faith and trust in our institutions.
“The Electoral Count Act of 1887 requires substantive improvements and the events of January 6, 2021, must never be allowed to happen again. Unfortunately, the proposal put forth today by House leadership seeks only to politicize electoral reform and undermine ongoing good-faith, bipartisan efforts in the Senate to amend existing law.
“In a time of uncertainty, renewing confidence in our elected officials and our elections strikes at the core of what our country needs to come together. The only path forward on this issue is one that rejects hyper-partisanship and embraces collaborative, cross-party solutions that will ensure the lawful, orderly transfer of power for future generations.”
