WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, U.S. Representatives Brian Fitzpatrick (PA-1) and Debbie Dingell (MI-6) introduced a bipartisan, bicameral resolution designating January as National Stalking Awareness Month, bringing national attention to life-threatening crime of stalking.

With nearly 1 in 3 women in the U.S. experiencing stalking in their lifetime—and over 13 million people stalked each year—this resolution underscores the urgent need to strengthen protections for victims, equip law enforcement with the necessary tools, and hold perpetrators fully accountable.

The Senate companion resolution, led by Senators Chuck Grassley (R-IA) and Amy Klobuchar (D-MN), has successfully passed.

“Stalking is not just harassment—it is a calculated, relentless form of psychological terror that leaves victims living in fear, often escalating to violence and even murder,” said Fitzpatrick. “No one should have to look over their shoulder, afraid for their safety. Our bipartisan resolution sends a clear and unequivocal message: we will not tolerate this crime, and we will fight to protect those at risk.”

“Stalking is a crime that robs victims of their sense of safety and too often leads to deadly consequences,” said Dingell. “It is one of the strongest indicators of future violence, including intimate partner homicide. We must raise awareness, educate communities, and take bold action to prevent stalking before it escalates to irreversible tragedy.”

“As a former prosecutor, I have seen firsthand how stalking terrorizes victims and devastates lives,” said Klobuchar. “This bipartisan resolution shines a spotlight on the urgency of addressing stalking, supporting survivors, and ensuring that those who commit these crimes are held accountable.”

“Stalking inflicts deep emotional and physical harm, leaving survivors in constant fear for their lives,” said Grassley. “By increasing awareness and recognizing the critical work of law enforcement and victim advocates, we are taking a stand against this dangerous crime.”

With this resolution, Fitzpatrick and Dingell reaffirm their unwavering commitment to protecting victims, strengthening anti-stalking laws, and ensuring survivors receive the justice and support they deserve.
