WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, building on years of bipartisan work as Co-Chair of the Congressional PFAS Task Force, Congressman Brian Fitzpatrick (PA-1), along with his fellow Task Force Member Congresswoman Hillary Scholten (D-MI), have introduced the Public Utility Remediation and Enhancement for Water (PURE) Act—bipartisan legislation to fund municipal water treatment upgrades that remove PFAS at the source.
PFAS—perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances—are persistent “forever chemicals” linked to cancers, reproductive challenges, birth defects, and other serious health harms.
“As Co-Chair of the bipartisan PFAS Task Force, I have worked to expose the scope of PFAS contamination, strengthen cleanup standards, and deliver federal resources to affected communities. Despite the progress we’ve made, ‘forever chemicals’ remain a serious threat, polluting our drinking water, endangering public health, and burdening municipalities with costs they did not create,” said Fitzpatrick. “Our PURE Water Act offers a targeted, bipartisan solution, funding municipal water treatment facilities to remove PFAS at the source, protect families, restore trust, and hold polluters—not taxpayers—accountable.”
“Michigan has some of the highest levels of PFAS in our drinking water. It’s one thing to recognize this problem, and it’s another to empower local communities to act,” said Scholten. “I’m proud to be introducing this commonsense, bipartisan legislation to provide water treatment facilities across the country with the necessary funding to conduct cleanups. Local governments shouldn’t be footing the bill–Congress needs to be doing everything we can to ensure communities can access clean drinking water. Continued PFAS Leadership
Fitzpatrick has been the driving force behind Congress’s response to PFAS contamination—building coalitions, advancing landmark legislation, and securing resources to protect families both in Pennsylvania and across the nation.
As Co-Founder and Co-Chair of the bipartisan Congressional PFAS Task Force, he has united lawmakers to raise cleanup standards, expand federal oversight, and hold polluters accountable. He recently authored the bipartisan PFAS National Drinking Water Standard Act of 2025, giving the EPA’s first-ever PFAS drinking water limits the full force of federal law to ensure they cannot be rolled back without Congress, and he is leading the charge to establish a Coordinator for PFAS-Impacted Defense Engagement at the Pentagon to provide families a direct advocate and accelerate long-overdue remediation at military sites.In addition to his legislative initiatives, Fitzpatrick has secured millions in federal funding to strengthen local water infrastructure and combat contamination—delivering more than $4 million for Horsham and Langhorne alone.
From enacting national drinking water standards, to demanding accountability at defense sites, to securing local investments, Fitzpatrick’s leadership has reshaped the federal response to PFAS and ensured that communities on the front lines are no longer left behind.
